support reconstruction in Haiti

we got an email from Heath Ceramics this weekend about their donating a percentage of their sales to support the reconstruction efforts that will arise in Haiti, post-earthquake. they are working to support the efforts of architecture for humanity and their plans for reaching out and making a difference with design, not only in Haiti, but around the world...it is a great way to help out both in the short term and long term.

on site

we are spending some time on site these days, rushing before the rain comes. there are great parts of construction and not-so-great parts. sometimes we take it for granted, being able to build something new and exciting- often we overlook the materials on the site- but artist sarah mackenzie has captured them in a way that is truly inspiring- wire and framing never looked so good. her new series of constuction-based paintings strip the pieces down to their basic visual elements- enjoy...

to live and buy in LA

we live in Los Angeles, for better or for worse. sure, friends laugh at us and tell us how they just bought an amazing mid-century ranch house for under 300k (NOT in southern california)...they talk about commutes, smog, overcrowding.....but we say- hey! we have culture, diversity, great food...and I think it was what, like 75 degrees on Christmas.....
but we hear what they're saying and it hurts....we sit down and try to pencil it out. how can we own a home here? and a modern home at that.... get a third job, sell our firstborn. don't worry, we are working on it. check back in 4 months... I think we'll have something.
